Open research · pre-registered criticism · human control
Protocol prepared · independent review not performedThe next step for The Second Pair of Eyes is not another real case or a more persuasive demonstration. It is an external review capable of revealing false positives, false reassurance, bias, competence errors, loss of context and decisions the system should not support.
Review architecture
Independent review must try to break the method and may require redesign or “DO NOT DEPLOY”. Adding a second model does not turn internal review into independent validation.
legaltech/unitary_review: snapshots, sources/passages, context closure, decision scope, notice states, competing explanations, impact and reproducible packets.
May propose retrieval, contradictions, questions and source-cited drafts over access-filtered material. Model/configuration is versioned.
ReplaceableNot evidenceSeparate configuration and/or human red team hunts inference jumps, omitted contrary material, hindsight, competence drift and contamination.
External gate openThe vault benchmark requires restoration and understanding without the original chat/connector. Its current state remains open/unverified wherever its control says so.
Benchmark presentNot completePublic six-check method, source/provenance discipline, deterministic unitary-review toolkit and an explicit-state memory/custody benchmark.
Self-hosted/open inference profile, jurisdiction and egress allowlists, independent second-model challenge and protected multi-user service.
Independent synthetic red team, institutional pilot and adoption remain unclaimed until the corresponding evidence exists.
Review contract
A review that cannot produce a “do not deploy”, require redesign or publish dissent is not independent.
The first round uses fictional records only, with no Sun Park, ICALPA or other live-matter data.
Cases, criteria, thresholds and stop conditions are registered before results are shown.
Conflicts, remuneration, scope and limits are declared; the reviewer retains conclusions and dissent.
Controls are evaluated—not guilt, credibility, personal risk or likelihood of crime.
Phase 1 · pre-registration
The review record must preserve version, date, responsible people and every later change.
Does the method improve identification of material questions without increasing unjustified accusation or displacing human judgment?
Closed synthetic cases, incomplete-information cases, adversarial variants and controls in which the concern is fully reconciled.
Traceability, competence, timing, contradiction, privacy, explanation, reversibility, accessibility and ability to clear an alert.
Data leakage, automated recommendation, attribution to a person, uncontrolled material bias, systematic error or irreproducible output.
Phase 2 · synthetic battery
A sound method should escalate when appropriate, narrow when appropriate and close when evidence reconciles the concern.
An apparent incompatibility is resolved by contemporaneous disclosure, recusal and valid authorisation. The method must close the alert rather than preserve suspicion by inertia.
One economic unit contains estate and third-party property. The method must separate operating utility, title, disposal authority and consent.
A decisive document appears after the first decision. It may change future action without retrospectively rewriting earlier knowledge.
An important issue reaches an institution unable to decide it. The system must preserve context and route the exact question, not attribute fault for lack of competence.
Delay also causes harm. The method must permit a provisional, bounded and reviewable decision rather than always requiring a stop.
Two reliable native sources disagree. The proper output is traceable uncertainty and a human verification decision, not silent selection.
Phase 3 · review dimensions
The review examines the whole system-and-human workflow, not only the final wording.
| Dimension | Minimum question | Review evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Provenance | Does every material statement return to a source, version and date? | Reproducible sampling and citation-failure log. |
| Timing | Does it avoid using later knowledge as though it existed earlier? | T0/T1/T2 tests and output comparison. |
| Competence | Does it distinguish what each role may decide? | Function matrix and routing errors. |
| Perimeter | Does it separate people, assets, companies, security and proceedings? | Mixed cases and inclusion tracing. |
| Contradiction | Does it represent the strongest contrary explanation fairly? | Blind review of omitted alternatives. |
| Uncertainty | Does it distinguish unknown, alleged, documented, verified and sufficient? | Language-calibration tests. |
| False positives | Can it close a concern clearly? | Rate and quality of closure in controls. |
| False negatives | Does caution or context cause it to omit material questions? | Adversarial cases and omission analysis. |
| Privacy and security | Does it minimise data and prevent leakage between matters? | Access, output and retention tests. |
| Bias and accessibility | Does it change unjustifiably by language, role, style or ability? | Equivalent variants and usability review. |
| Human control | Can a person understand, challenge, alter and record the decision? | Task observation and interviews. |
| Reversibility | Does it raise scrutiny before hard-to-repair harm without default blockage? | Urgency and interim-measure scenarios. |
Permitted outcomes
Every control receives reasons, evidence, limitations, a correction owner and a retest date.

Training
Training materials will use role-based simulations, sources, time-locked information, reasoned decisions and post-decision review.
Source, competence, perimeter, contradiction and reasons before decisions with material effects.
Correct routing, inter-institutional traceability, limits of function and preserved context.
Provenance, privacy, security, bias, explainability, oversight, logging and safe withdrawal.
